Codename: Cinder Phoenix
Real Name: Rebecca Marshall
Other Aliases: None
Age: 19
Sex: Female
Gender: Female
Height: 6' / 183 cm
Weight: 136 lbs / 62 kg
Background:
Rebecca Marshall was willingly given up to the Hero Union at a young age due to financial difficulties caused by her unique, hyperactive metabolism. Rebecca was raised in a highly positive, supervised, and emotionally-fulfilling environment (as per Hero Union regulations for adoptees), and was given stimulation and educated tailored to her focused, driven personality. Rebecca joined the Hero Union of her own free will, and graduated from training with high marks at the age of eighteen. In addition to her patrols, Cinder has expressed a desire to continue her education, and (with the Union's approval) is currently studying the culinary arts two nights a week.
Personality:
Atypically selfless, Rebecca does not have a strong grasp of the severity of her limitations or the stresses her powers put her body under. She regularly pushes her body past reasonable limits in circumstances where doing so is completely unnecessary. Rebecca is friendly and personable, and highly civic-minded, she appears to earnestly desire to protect civilians from harm but her arrogance needs to be carefully monitored. She's extremely driven and success-oriented, and often takes perceived failures very harshly. Rebecca has a poor body image, likely stemming from her inability to gain a healthy amount of body fat. As an aside, she's quite passionate about cooking, and has stated numerous times that she dreams of being a chef.
Metahuman Capabilities:
Rebecca's metahuman abilities are unusual in the extreme. While she appears to be primarily a pyrokinetic, she's one of a very few who can actually generate the fire she controls. Her abilities may be more than simple pyrokinesis, she's exhibited some signs of thermokinesis--the ability to manipulate ambient heat--as well. The most striking manifestation of Rebecca's metahuman nature is an alteration to biology. What would be hair follicles on a normal baseline individual instead produce a low-temperature flame which Rebecca can easily manipulate. This flame is largely fueled by Rebecca's caloric intake: her body produces a bare minimum of fat, the bulk of the nutrients she takes in instead converted directly into flame.
This should not, by itself, be an issue for her biologically, but coupled with another aspect of her metahuman abilities it exacerbates a pre-existing problem: Rebecca's metabolism is hyperactive. Her body's rate of cellular growth and decay is astounding, enabling her to heal injuries in a matter of hours or minutes, typically before any risk of an infection can take place. Her immune system is likewise supercharged: targeting and overwhelming even virulent illnesses before they can take hold. When Rebecca was exposed to the Chicken Pox as a child she manifested symptoms of the disease for approximately three minutes before her body overwhelmed it and recovered. The benefits of her high metabolism are many: she thinks and processes sensory information more quickly than most people, and is able to reach land speeds of over ninety miles per hour.
Her abilities are not without downsides, however: Rebecca needs to consume at least a thousand calories per every hour she isn't [REDACTED]. As her body converts nearly all additional calories directly into "firepower," the Hero Union includes numerous 2,000 calorie meal replacement bars in her standard 'patrol' kit, and her teammates are encouraged to carry an intravenous nutrient injector in the unfortunately not-unusual event that she pushes herself too far (or "burns out" as she calls it) and falls unconscious. Due to her nature, her body does not easily produce fat, preventing her from easily achieving a healthy body weight. This makes her caloric need more urgent: her body does not have any meaningful energy reserves to fall back upon and, if pushed to utilize those reserves, will quickly start consuming itself. Her lack of body fat has another downside as well: Rebecca lacks insulation, and is particularly vulnerable to intense cold.
Other Skills:
- Trained paramedic
Known Limitations:
- Her extreme metabolism puts immense stress on her body, requiring approximately 1,000 calories per hour and often more in times of physical stress
- Poor judgement
- Poor body image, insecure, and indecisive
- Prone to risky behavior
Hero Union Notes:
- Rebecca often volunteers with the local fire departments. Her "super speed" means she's often the first on site, and while she can't directly extinguish fires, her pyrokinetic abilities can prevent them from spreading, allowing the local fire departments to quickly bring even large fires under control.
- She changes her costumes very frequently, likely due to her poor body image.
- Her latest action figure has proven surprisingly popular among college-aged women.
- She has received decorations for bravery from the New Seattle Fire Department.
- Her last monitor, [REDACTED], retired after [REDACTED]. At Sara Deckard's request, Rebecca was not assigned a new monitor.
