I've set this up to show off some unused concept art. The "what might have beens" of the comic, or even things I haven't found ways to use yet.
I'm going to start things off with Jayhawk's original costume:
I dunno about you guys, but I hate pretty much everything about this. I always knew I wanted to make her heavily coast guard affiliated: she's named after the helicopters they use, after all, but this just... didn't work. It's got the asymmetry down, but it doesn't really make a statement. Her hair is probably the worst of it, it's something born from indecisiveness. When I first sketched her out, I wasn't sure who I wanted Jayhawk to be and it really shows.
The final costume I went with is far different: I made her Native American rather than, well, I didn't really have a plan beforehand, gave her long hair, and made her 'superhero costume' a variation on modern US Coast Guard diving gear. We haven't seen her do any rescue diving yet, but if an opportunity ever arises she's prepared.
The other piece I want to show off is Zero Signal, who was originally going to be on the Hero Union's night crew:
He's very 1990s Seattle, or at least how I always pictured 1990s Seattle, and for what it's worth I still like the concept of his powers: he's a low-powered individual who silences anything he touches, and can use that to dazzle people. That's a really hard concept to show in a drawn medium, it'd take a better artist than me to pull off. Even worse: his power also leaves him deaf and mute, which means he simply wouldn't have made him enjoyable to write for.
I eventually replaced Zero Signal with Umbrage, who has weird interactions with light instead of sound.
